Quilt of Grace is DONE

Yes, Past Me, there were four blocks remaining. And now the Lucy Boston quilt is completed.

WOO HOO!

Meanwhile, another hen has joined the Layers Club; my husband found an egg when he removed their feed late this afternoon. I had done some coop cleaning mid-afternoon and had checked all the boxes, and the hubby checked my checking, LOL. It was dark when he removed the egg, but once he brought it inside, we found it was Nadia-coloured, so probably a Barnevelder. I wondered if Cami the Welsummer had laid it because on the field trip this morning, Cami submissively squatted when my husband tried to pet her and she had NEVER squatted for either of us. Cami detests being touched, maybe she'll be the fourth member of the Layers Club in the near future.

From left; mystery chicken's egg, Camilla's egg, Nadia's egg.

My poor Quilt of Grace, wholly usurped by CHICKENS! Or rather eggs, lol. So, back to the quilt, under which I am cozily seated at this very moment in time. I'll post a photo of it tomorrow, once I've hung it on the laundry line. But it's far too late for that now, barely enough time left this evening for me to wax lyrically about a truly beloved quilt, and those silly hens. During the field trip this morning Camilla laid her egg, then Nadia had her turn. Camilla has laid an egg every day save one since Sunday, Nadia every other day.

For five months these chickens haven't done anything at all egg-related. They have kept us entertained, busy, and running to the feed store for feed or hay or other chicken-related paraphernalia. Now suddenly we're taking things FROM THEM! Dude, that's like, well, CRAZY!

(Poor quilt is getting dissed by hens, lol....)

Maybe because we thought eggs wouldn't be forthcoming for months, we possessed a different view of these chickens. They're not pets, mostly because none of them want to be picked up. Yet they trail after us, thinking we have treats on our persons 24/7. We clean up after them, feed and water them, talk to them; I sing to them, croon actually, while my husband will let them out of the run and look after them as they wander about or he leads them into the garden. When the sun shone there weeks ago, he'd do some weeding while they scratched and clucked. Now it's perpetual shade until late February, and while he doesn't mind meandering in the shade, I strongly prefer the sunshine. And as long as there's a glimmer of sun, and nothing better for me to do, I keep an eye on the hens while they scratch and poke about.

This morning, before I went outside, I ironed and began cutting fabric. It was too cold for me, lol, but then I made my Christmas card list and had my Metamucil, with a half-coffee/half-tea chaser. After that I met up with my husband and the hens, all but Camilla, who was busy in the coop.

Meanwhile, my quilt was in the washer. My goodness, if the hens weren't being so good at their main task in life, my beautiful quilt would be front and center within this post!

Yet it's late, as I said, and I haven't even taken a picture of the quilt yet. This afternoon was busy with errands, then cleaning the coop, etc, so the quilt waited in a heap on the couch. Not until after dinner did I sit under it, giving it a thorough exam to see how the hand-quilting survived the washer. A few stitches had popped, so I sorted those, as well as finding one short stretch of stitches had actually come loose! I removed that, sewed a new row, then added another row where the quilt needed it. Now it's well after seven p.m., usually the time I'm sewing. Instead I'm blogging about chickens, eggs, and oh, my new shiny QUILT!

Anyway, the quilt is completed. The hens are put to bed. Soon enough I'll end this day, full of egg adventures, a new task accomplished by a mystery chicken, Cami's strange submissiveness, and how seven hens could have cared less if Camilla was among them.

Chickens, minus Camilla, enjoying the marvelous sun!

LOLOL! We won't tell Camilla. And tomorrow I'll post a shot of my awesome quilt, and probably blather on about the the Layers Club. Sleep well!
