A warm October day

Since we moved to Humboldt, the running joke this time of year when the sun shines and it's above sixty-three degrees Fahrenheit is that this is the LAST NICE DAY.

Today could certainly qualify for how freaking warm it is outside! Currently sixty-nine at our not that near the ocean location. It was seventy-one earlier, DUDE! Pockets of coolish air in the shade, like near the chicken coop, but otherwise it's this glorious autumnal weather that makes up for all the gray summer days we receive.

Currently I'm dressed in capri leggings and a short sleeved t-shirt. Like it's July, though even here in July long leggings are my norm. I'm grateful it's not cold because Owl Chicken is so bedraggled in her molting appearance, what a sight she is! She still looks like a big pullet, but handles her situation with aplomb when Ruthie tries to assert herself. Owl doesn't take crap from any other hen.

We have guests this weekend, a couple of my husband's high school buddies. I think tomorrow they're going to hike a trail, plenty of those around here. I'll try to get some editing done on Deadfern. It's been a strange week, prepping for guests after just saying Adios to guests, but a nice oddness. And how weird that forty years passes in the seemingly blink of an eye.

I'll blink again and Owl will be her fully feathered self. I'll blink and it will be November! I'll blink and.... And sometimes it's best not to get too far ahead of the timeline. Surprises are good, as well as resting in this very moment. This very moment, in writing this kinda ho-hum post, this moment with plenteous sun, this moment is all I have. All you have. All we can grasp are minutes, seconds, as long as it takes to breathe in and out. Truly that's all to life there is.

In hand-quilting the Mandolin cozy, I'm perplexed at how little I recall making the blocks, yet Past Me did a fabulous job in fussy cutting the one pictured above. She was clever, or I was way back when-ish, LOL. I can clearly recall making the joining blocks, beginning to put it all together, then laying it aside, that was last year. Yet prior to that, how many quilts and tops have emerged, and all the stitches run together like an ice cream cone plopped onto the ground, melting in vague autumnal heat.

Or not so vague in the sun, hehehe. One of our guests wants to build a fire tonight. Tonight is the LAST NIGHT one needs a fire for warmth, but my husband said, "Sure!" and I'll leave them to it. Because sometimes being in the moment, even if it seems bizarre, is what we're called to do.

So here's a post, a definite being in the moment entry. Have a great rest of the week, and if you live in America and are registered to vote, please do so!
